4 ways magnesium oil will help you through these tough times

There has never been a more important time to look after our health and well-being than now.

With COVID-19 spreading faster than we as a nation can keep up we are all feeling the fear, anxiety and uncertainty of what lays ahead.

As a species that seeks control and certainty on the daily, we are being challenged more than ever to surrender to the current reality and accept that the way we live moving forward is going to be different.

So, how will magnesium oil support you through this time?

With the constant stream of communication coming in whether that be via the news feed on your phone, the television or your trip to the shops our cortisol levels (stress hormone) are going gang busters at the moment. On top of this the fear and anxiety around the economic impact and what this looks like for our finances is the cherry on the cake.

Stress causes us to waste our magnesium stores immensely, it is like a fire to our stores - literally burning through it and sending it out through our urine. Magnesium oil can reduce the release of the hormone that tells your adrenal glands to hit fight or flight and pump out the cortisol and adrenaline (this hormone is called ACTH), and it can reduce the responsiveness of the adrenal glands to ACTH. Magnesium oil can also act at the blood brain barrier to prevent the entrance of stress hormones into the brain (Yes, Please!!) . This is exactly why magnesium has been dubbed "the original chill pill."

There have been a number of doctors coming out talking about the importance of sleep right now. A few have stated people who have only slept 4 hours as a posed to those who have slept 8 hours have a reduced response to a vaccination. This is one angle however the impact sleep (or a lack of) has on our ability to fight off what we come in contact with is what i think is more important. Our body uses the time of sleeping and deep REM rest to recover, it repairs and rebuilds damaged cells and prepares ourselves for the day ahead. With a virus going around as contagious as COVID-19 we all need as much repair and protection as we can get and this can only happen during the time we give our body to sleep.

Magnesium oil increases GABA a neurotransmitter than promotes sleep and encourages relaxation. Low GABA levels in the body can make it difficult to relax and switch off and in turn reducing the quality of your sleep, causing you to toss and turn or wake in the middle of the night with a racing mind.

Magnesium calms your nervous system assisting in reducing the feelings of fear, irritability and restlessness. We hold onto so much tension in our muscles, often subconsciously, which impacts our ability to feel calm. Magnesium plays an important role in regulating neurotransmitters, which send messages throughout the brain and body. Keeping this mineral topped up through heightened periods of stress is essential.

Few dietary elements have more influence over the body than magnesium. Your magnesium levels can benefit your sleep, as well as your mental and physical well-being.

Magnesium is an essential mineral, one of seven essential macro-minerals that the human body needs in large quantities yet it does not produce on its own. The magnesium your body needs must come from outside sources - food and supplements.

Magnesium rich foods to be upping during this time include:

  • Dark leafy greens
  • Seeds and nuts, including sunflower and sesame seeds, cashews and almonds
  • Squash, broccoli, and other vegetables
  • Legumes
  • High quality meat
  • Unprocessed whole grains

There is no doubt this is a nerve-racking time and one that we will all be dealing with in our own ways. We are living through the unknown of what is ahead so take this time to focus on the now, do things you have been wanting to do but haven't had time, be selfless with your days filling them with things that serve you and your family the best way possible and remember we are all in this together - be vulnerable, ask for help and stay connected.
