Help Your Body Rest – How Magnesium Can Quiet Your Nervous System

By Clementine Beale | Published the 18th Jun 2018

In our busy, modern lives where we always seem to be on the go, it’s no wonder that we feel a little on edge. But what is this stress doing to your nervous system? Your nervous system controls literally the entire body and unless you give it chance to switch into rest mode, your body will continue to be flooded with the stress hormone, cortisol.

If you’re feeling constantly frazzled due to poor quality sleep, magnesium could be just what you need to calm down your nervous system and give your body some well-earned rest.

The role of your nervous system

Your nervous system has the job of transmitting signals around the body, with the central nervous system consisting of the spine and brain and the peripheral nervous system consisting of the nerves themselves. Within the peripheral nervous system is the autonomic nervous system, which is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Still with us? Good. The job of the sympathetic nervous system is to prepare the body for threats, otherwise known as the fight or flight response, while the parasympathetic nervous system controls the rest and digest function of the body.

An uptight nervous system

So, here’s the problem. The sympathetic nervous system came in very helpful back when we were cave people and needed to run away very fast from woolly mammoths as it meant our body would speed up, muscles would tense and we’d become more alert. Once we were safe, the parasympathetic system would kick in and relax our body. However, the issue with our stressful lifestyles is that the stress response of our body is often continual and our sympathetic nervous system is in overdrive. You know that feeling where you just can’t switch off? This could be because your nervous system is still on edge.

If you can take steps to let your parasympathetic nervous system to take over, extra blood is sent to your organs, digestion works more effectively, your heartbeat slows and your breathing relaxes. That’s where magnesium can help.

The amazing role of magnesium

If you’re feeling on edge a lot of the time, magnesium can really help to quiet down the nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is inhibited by magnesium which means it can control the fight or flight response that your body may be experiencing. It also relaxes the whole nervous system which lets your parasympathetic nervous system to do its job and restore the body.
