Due to the amount of intense exercise that athletes regularly put their bodies through, their muscles can often become sore and overworked, and in some situations, may result in delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This can impact their athletic performance as well as threaten both strength training and recovery. Using magnesium oil for DOMS can help
Magnesium deficiency and athletes
Magnesium deficiency (also known as hypomagnesemia) is one of the leading nutrient deficiencies in adults. Certain studies into the levels of magnesium have indicated that between 60% and 80% of the general population have some form of magnesium deficiency. Even athletes, who are known for working hard to take great care of their bodies, can be affected by magnesium deficiency. Every day, the magnesium stores in the human body are depleted due to normal bodily functions such as maintaining a regular heartbeat, normal muscle movement, and the production of hormones. Athletes are highly prone to being deficient in magnesium because the demand for magnesium by the human body is increased during regular intense exercise. In addition, the potential magnesium loss is increased when partaking in regular exercise. Hypomagnesemia can dramatically impact athletic performance, contributing to strength and power limitations as well as the dysfunction and noticeable weakening of muscles.
Magnesium for DOMS
Delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS, is the term given to the pain and stiffness experienced in muscles following intense, or unaccustomed, exercise. DOMS may be felt within several hours, or for several days after the activity and is usually strongest between 24 hours and 72 hours after the exercise has taken place – commonly referred to as the ‘two- or three- day burn’. Symptoms of DOMS include a dull, aching pain in the affected muscle or muscles, and is typically only felt when the muscle is put under pressure, stretched or contracted. Many people consider the symptoms of DOMS, at least in mild cases, DOMS, to be a reminder of all of the hard work that they have achieved during their workout. However, more severe cases of DOMS can be far more painful than just a tolerable tenderness, and in some situations can be a debilitating experience.
Using magnesium oil for DOMS can be very beneficial for athletes. Magnesium has numerous muscle-relaxing qualities that can help ease muscular aches, pains and cramps, and are particularly effective when magnesium therapy is applied transdermally (topically to the skin). By rubbing Salt Lab’s magnesium oil directly into the affected muscles, whether it is after an intense workout or as part of your normal post-training routine, athletes can quickly ease muscular tenderness, aches and pains experienced in overworked muscles.
Quick and easy to use, our magnesium oil is applied directly to the skin for rapid absorption, and is fast-acting to ensure athletes get the magnesium they need almost as soon as they need it, thus maintaining their athletic performance.
