Exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety, which often impact on sleep, as well as increasing the amount of time spent in deep sleep. While some people can’t exercise too close to bed or it impacts on sleep, others have no problem – it just depends on the individual. To move your body and calm down your nervous system, try a few gentle yoga moves before bed.
Check your environment
Your bedroom should work with you to help you fall asleep, not the other way around! With that in mind, take a look at your bedroom and see if there’s anything you need to change. The room should be nice and dark – this will help to trigger melatonin – so minimise any light sources. Next time you jump into bed, check that the mattress and pillow are comfortable. If you struggle to sleep due to noise, such as road noise or a snoring partner, invest in a pair of ear plugs.
