Magnesium For Sleep (And Other Natural Ways To Get Good Quality Shut-Eye!)

Tired? You’re not alone. While our busy lives have made us more stressed out and irritable than ever, getting quality sleep seems to be increasingly elusive. If you find yourself panicking at night because you need to be up in a few hours but you STILL can’t fall asleep, there are some very effective natural solutions, including magnesium, you can try before reaching for those sleeping pills.

Magnesium oil

Magnesium deficiency can lead to restlessness and insomnia, which is why boosting your levels is our favourite way to help get a great night’s sleep. Magnesium has a unique ability to relax the muscles and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the body’s rest and repair function. It also helps maintain healthy levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter which relaxes nerve activity. Topical magnesium oil is the easiest delivery method – just apply to your stomach and/or feet and hop into bed!

Switch off technology

You’ve probably heard this one before but seriously, how often do you follow the advice and switch off technology before bed? Yes, it’s tempting to stay connected to the TV, computer or smartphone (or all three at once!) but studies show that technology can seriously impact on the quality of your sleep. This is especially the case with our phones, which often live right next to our bed. Try to restrict the use of technology to earlier in the evening and aim for tech free time just before bed.

Exercise regularly (and give yoga a try!)

It might seem counterintuitive when we say that regular vigorous exercise can help you sleep but it’s true! Exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety, which often impact on sleep, as well as increasing the amount of time spent in deep sleep. While some people can’t exercise too close to bed or it impacts on sleep, others have no problem – it just depends on the individual. To move your body and calm down your nervous system, try a few gentle yoga moves before bed.

Check your environment

Your bedroom should work with you to help you fall asleep, not the other way around! With that in mind, take a look at your bedroom and see if there’s anything you need to change. The room should be nice and dark – this will help to trigger melatonin – so minimise any light sources. Next time you jump into bed, check that the mattress and pillow are comfortable. If you struggle to sleep due to noise, such as road noise or a snoring partner, invest in a pair of ear plugs.
