Tired? Let Magnesium Be Your Chauffeur to Improved REM!

There’s nothing more frustrating than waking up from a night’s sleep feeling sluggish and irritable, especially if you went to bed at a decent time. So, what gives? Why are you struggling so much to get good quality sleep? Before you reach for heavy duty medication, it could be as simple as you being deficient in an essential mineral – magnesium. Magnesium plays a surprising role in improving your REM sleep so you wake up with a spring in your step.

So, tell me more about REM

When you drift off for the night, your brain cycles through a number of different sleep stages (five, actually) and one of those stages is REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. REM sleep usually happens in cycles of 90 to 120 minutes and, incredibly, your brain is almost as active as when you’re awake. As the night goes on, your REM stage gets longer. Ideally, you should spend around 20-25% of your night in REM sleep.

As the name suggests, your eyes move around very quickly during this sleep stage and you tend to experience your most vivid dreams. Although your brain is active, your muscles are immobilised – this is probably to stop us from acting out some of the crazy dreams we’re having!

The benefits of REM sleep

REM sleep is when memory consolidation happens and it’s been found that people spend longer in REM sleep if they’ve had to learn a lot of new tasks during the day. There have also been some studies which show that REM sleep can help people read emotions more effectively and take the edge off emotional experiences. Also, REM sleep before a traumatic event can help the brain cope better. REM is also very important for brain development in infants.

If you’re just not getting enough REM sleep at night, it can lead to consequences such as poor coping skills, weight gain, and migraines.

Magnesium and REM

One of the many benefits of magnesium is that supports deeper, restorative sleep and allows you to drift off more easily. It also helps your cortisol levels to drop which give your melatonin, the sleep hormone, a chance to surge.  With your body relaxed and the magnesium doing it to promote restorative sleep, it’s much easier for your body to slide into REM sleep.

To give magnesium a try for a better night’s sleep, give Salt Lab’s high-grade magnesium oil a try. Our magnesium oil is super concentrated, easily absorbed, safe for everyone and vegan-friendly.
